No Camera? Big Problem.

Whenever there is a surge of crime or disturbance in a neighborhood, it's imporant, and natural, to heighten security to ensure you and your neighbors remain protected. Just recently, my vehicle was broken into in my driveway. Nobody remotely local was suspected but I was caught in a literal blind spot of coverage and had NO evidence! (Shoutout to my wonderful neighbors for some assistance!)

As a Homeowner, Rental Property Owner & Realtor, I come across every kind of home automation imaginable. It helps that I'm also a bit of a techie and have some very gifted friends in that field. That in mind, here are my recommended list of security and camera providers.

My focus is generally on limiting long-term costs while getting the most for your money (no blocked features, etc.). At $12/mo or more for a subscription, I've found it often pays dividends to tolerate more up front cost than the cheapest option - but theres alot to consider.

Reolink offers a range of high-quality security cameras and systems that are known for their affordability and ease of use. Their product line includes:

  • Wi-Fi Cameras: These cameras provide 1080p to 4MP resolution and come with features like two-way audio and motion detection. Prices typically range from $30 to $100.

  • PoE Cameras: Power over Ethernet (PoE) cameras are perfect for those looking for a more stable connection and can deliver high-definition video. Pricing starts around $60 and can go up to $150.

  • Solar-Powered Cameras: Ideal for outdoor use, these cameras harness solar energy, reducing your electricity costs. They are generally priced between $90 and $200.

Reolink also offers a 100% FREE user-friendly mobile and desktop apps that allow for easy remote access and management of your security system, plus optional cloud storage plans starting at $3/month. Or, if you prefer, Reolink offer a "hub" which can store all your footage on your own cloud, with your own hard drives. Furthermore, if you're a real techie, they are fully Home Assistant compatible and will operate independent of any Reolink software, at all.

Lastly, your data stays yours. They do not share or network together as some other systems are rumored to do. Privacy is big with this company.

The big con is that they really only offer cameras at this time.

2) Wyze

Wyze is known for its budget-friendly smart home products, including a variety of security cameras and sensors. Their offerings include:

  • Indoor and Outdoor Cameras: Both options come with features like night vision, motion detection, and cloud storage options. Prices range from $20 to $50.

  • Cam Plus Subscription: For a small monthly fee of $1.99/camera, users can access additional features like person detection and unlimited video storage.

  • Smart Sensors: Wyze also provides door and motion sensors that integrate seamlessly with their cameras for a complete security solution, typically priced around $20 each.

Wyze's commitment to affordability without sacrificing quality makes it a popular choice among homeowners. They offer EVERYTHING from water sensors to windows/doors, FULL security systems with Control Keypads and more. These cameras frequently are much smaller, allowing them to be tucked away and are supported by a wide range of accessories to make installation, anywhere a breeze.

Con: If you want ALOT of cameras, the cost could stack up but, they do offer a subscription plan that covers any number of cameras for just $9.99/mo.

3) Ring

Ring is a well-known brand in the home security space, particularly for its video doorbells. Their product line includes:

  • Video Doorbells: These allow homeowners to see and speak to visitors from anywhere using their smartphone, with prices ranging from $100 to $200.

  • Security Cameras: Ring offers both indoor and outdoor cameras with features like HD video, two-way talk, and customizable motion zones, typically priced between $60 and $200.

  • Alarm Systems: Their comprehensive home security systems include door/window sensors, motion detectors, and a base station, with packages starting around $199.

With a subscription plan starting at $3/month, users can access recorded video footage and advanced features, making Ring a robust option for home security.

4) Nest

Nest, a Google company, has been known for its smart home products that integrate seamlessly with Google Assistant. Lately though, they have backed off considerably and are considering exiting the market while remaining one of the most expensiver competitors.

Their security product line includes:

  • Nest Cam: Available in indoor and outdoor options, these cameras provide high-definition video, night vision, and intelligent alerts. Prices typically range from $100 to $200.

  • Nest Secure: This is a complete home security system that includes motion sensors, door/window sensors, and a central hub, generally priced around $400.

  • Nest Hello Doorbell: This smart doorbell features HD video, facial recognition, and two-way audio, allowing for easy interaction with visitors, priced around $230.

Nest's integration with other smart home devices makes it an excellent choice for those looking to create a connected home environment, with subscription options starting at $6/month for additional features.
